Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator β WHR and Risk Category
Calculate your waist to hip ratio from waist and hip measurements. Get a risk category (low, moderate, high) based on gender-specific guidelines.
Waist to Hip Ratio Calculator
Calculate waist-to-hip ratio and cardiovascular risk category.
How the waist to hip ratio calculator works
WHR = waist Γ· hip. Risk categories: men <0.95 low, 0.95β1.0 moderate, >1.0 high; women <0.80 low, 0.80β0.85 moderate, >0.85 high. Use consistent units (cm or in).
Understanding waist to hip ratio and health
Where you carry fat matters. Abdominal (visceral) fat is more strongly linked to heart disease, diabetes and metabolic problems than fat on the hips and thighs. The waist to hip ratio (WHR) is a simple way to assess fat distribution. A higher ratio means more belly fat relative to hip size.
Measure your waist at the navel (or narrowest point) and your hip at the widest part of the buttocks. Use the same units for both. Divide waist by hip to get the ratio. The calculator applies gender-specific cutoffs: men tend to store more abdominal fat, so their risk thresholds are higher than womenβs.
WHR complements BMI. BMI reflects total weight relative to height; WHR reflects shape. Someone can have a normal BMI but a high WHR (apple shape) and still face elevated risk. Use both with our body fat and calorie calculators for a fuller health picture.
