Brick Calculator

Estimate bricks needed for a wall. Enter wall and brick dimensions in feet. Standard brick: 8" Γ— 2.25".

How the brick calculator works

bricks = (wall_length Γ— wall_height) Γ· (brick_with_mortar_area) Γ— (1 + waste%)

Brick area includes mortar: (brick_length + joint) Γ— (brick_height + joint). Use consistent units (inches or cm) for all dimensions.

Estimating bricks for walls and projects

Whether you are building a garden wall, a fireplace, or a full exterior, knowing how many bricks to order saves time and money. Ordering too few means delays and possible color mismatches on a second batch. Ordering too many wastes money and storage space. A brick calculator uses the wall area and the effective area each brick covers (including mortar) to give you a reliable estimate.

Brick dimensions vary by region and type. US modular bricks are typically 7.5 Γ— 3.5 Γ— 2.25 inches. UK bricks are 215 Γ— 102.5 Γ— 65 mm. Always measure your actual bricks or check the supplier spec. The mortar joint adds to each brick’s footprint: a 3/8 inch joint on all sides increases the area per brick. Our calculator accounts for this so you get a realistic count.

A waste factor of 5–10% is standard. Bricks get cut at corners and openings; some may break during handling or laying. For complex patterns, arches, or if you are new to bricklaying, use 10% or more. It is better to have a few extra than to run short. Use our concrete calculator for footings and our paint calculator if you plan to coat the wall. For floor coverage, try the tile calculator.
