How the CGPA formula works
CGPA is the weighted average of your grade points, with credits as the weights:
CGPA = Σ (Grade points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
For example, if you have an 8 in a 4-credit course and a 9 in a 3-credit course, your CGPA = (8×4 + 9×3) ÷ (4+3) = 59÷7 ≈ 8.43. Grade points typically range from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest grade.
Understanding CGPA and the 10-point grading system
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is widely used in Indian higher education, including engineering colleges, universities, and schools following the CBSE or similar boards. Unlike the 4.0 GPA scale common in the United States, the CGPA scale runs from 0 to 10, with 10 representing the highest achievement. Each course is assigned a grade point (e.g. 10 for O or A+, 9 for A, 8 for B+, and so on) and a credit value. Your CGPA is the sum of (grade point × credits) for all courses, divided by the total credits.
