How the CGPA formula works

CGPA is the weighted average of your grade points, with credits as the weights:

CGPA = Σ (Grade points × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

For example, if you have an 8 in a 4-credit course and a 9 in a 3-credit course, your CGPA = (8×4 + 9×3) ÷ (4+3) = 59÷7 ≈ 8.43. Grade points typically range from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest grade.

Understanding CGPA and the 10-point grading system

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is widely used in Indian higher education, including engineering colleges, universities, and schools following the CBSE or similar boards. Unlike the 4.0 GPA scale common in the United States, the CGPA scale runs from 0 to 10, with 10 representing the highest achievement. Each course is assigned a grade point (e.g. 10 for O or A+, 9 for A, 8 for B+, and so on) and a credit value. Your CGPA is the sum of (grade point × credits) for all courses, divided by the total credits.

CGPA is important for placements, higher studies, and scholarships. Many companies and postgraduate programs set minimum CGPA requirements. By tracking your CGPA with this calculator, you can see how each course affects your overall average and plan your semester to maintain or improve your standing. If your university uses a different letter-to-grade-point mapping, convert your letter grades to the appropriate points before entering them.

Converting CGPA to percentage

Many institutions and employers ask for a percentage equivalent. A common conversion formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5, though this varies. Some universities use CGPA × 10 or other multipliers. Always check your institution's official conversion table. This calculator focuses on computing CGPA from your course grades; use the result with your university's conversion policy to get the percentage equivalent.
