How the final grade formula works
Your overall grade is a weighted average of your current work and the final exam:
Overall = (Current × Current weight) + (Final × Final weight)
To find the required final score, we solve for Final: Final = (Target − Current × Current weight) ÷ Final weight. The result is the percentage you need on the final exam.
Planning for your final exam with a grade calculator
As the semester winds down, many students wonder what score they need on the final exam to pass a course, maintain a scholarship, or reach a target GPA. The final grade calculator answers that question precisely. By entering your current grade (the average of assignments, quizzes and midterms so far), the percentage weight of that work, the weight of the final exam, and your target overall grade, you get the minimum final exam score required.
For example, if your current grade is 80% and it counts for 70% of your final grade, and the final exam counts for 30%, to achieve a 85% overall you would need 101.67% on the final—which is impossible. That tells you that an 85% target is not achievable; you would need to aim for a lower target or accept that your current performance limits your ceiling. Conversely, if you need only 60% on the final to get a B, you can plan your study time accordingly and focus on other courses.
Understanding grade weights
Course syllabi often break down grades into multiple components: homework (20%), quizzes (20%), midterm (30%), final (30%). To use this calculator, combine everything except the final into your current grade and current weight. If homework is 20%, quizzes 20%, and midterm 30%, your current weight is 70%. Calculate your current grade as the weighted average of those components, then enter 70% and 30% for the weights. The calculator will tell you what you need on the final.
