How the fraction simplification formula works
A fraction represents a division: numerator ÷ denominator. To simplify a fraction, you divide both parts by their greatest common divisor (GCD) so that the numerator and denominator share no common factors except 1.
simplified numerator = numerator ÷ GCD(numerator, denominator)
simplified denominator = denominator ÷ GCD(numerator, denominator)
Once the fraction is in lowest terms, you can convert it to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Multiplying that decimal by 100 gives the percentage form:
decimal = numerator ÷ denominator
percent = decimal × 100
