How the fraction simplification formula works

A fraction represents a division: numerator ÷ denominator. To simplify a fraction, you divide both parts by their greatest common divisor (GCD) so that the numerator and denominator share no common factors except 1.

simplified numerator = numerator ÷ GCD(numerator, denominator)
simplified denominator = denominator ÷ GCD(numerator, denominator)

Once the fraction is in lowest terms, you can convert it to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator. Multiplying that decimal by 100 gives the percentage form:

decimal = numerator ÷ denominator
percent = decimal × 100

When to use a fraction calculator

Fractions appear in school math, recipes, measurements, and everyday comparisons. A fraction calculator helps when you need to check homework, convert mixed units, or quickly see whether two fractions are equivalent. Because it simplifies fractions and shows decimal and percentage forms side by side, it builds intuition for how ratios relate to percentages.

For example, 1/2, 0.5 and 50% all describe the same proportion. Seeing these together makes it easier to move between formats when reading charts, exam questions or financial statements. You can also pair this tool with the percentage calculator and ratio calculator to explore the same relationship in multiple ways.
