How the GPA calculator works
The calculator uses a weighted average: each course contributes to the GPA in proportion to its credits.
GPA = (Σ grade_points × credits) ÷ total_credits
For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course give (4×3 + 3×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
Understanding GPA and how to use this calculator
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the most important numbers in academic life. Colleges, employers, and scholarship committees use it to assess performance. A GPA condenses your grades across many courses into a single number, making it easy to compare students or track your own progress over time.
Most schools use a 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0. Some institutions use a 5.0 scale for honors or advanced placement courses. Our calculator accepts any numeric grade value; just enter the number that corresponds to your letter grade on your school's scale.
Credits (or credit hours) reflect how much weight a course carries. A 4-credit course affects your GPA more than a 2-credit course. The weighted GPA formula multiplies each grade by its credits, sums those products, and divides by total credits. This ensures that harder or more substantial courses count more.
