How the grade calculator works
The calculator converts your score to a percentage and maps it to a letter grade:
percent = (score ÷ total_points) × 100
Letter grades follow a standard scale from A (93% and above) down to F (below 60%). The exact cutoffs may vary by school; this tool provides a common reference. For weighted averages across multiple courses, use our GPA calculator.
When and why to use a grade calculator
Students and teachers often need to convert raw scores (e.g. 42 out of 50) into percentages and letter grades. Doing this by hand requires division and multiplication, and it is easy to make mistakes. A grade calculator does the math instantly: you enter the score and total points, and you get the percentage and letter grade. No spreadsheet or calculator app needed.
Use it after a test or assignment to see your grade before official results, to check that a teacher's grading is consistent, or to estimate what score you need on a final to reach a target grade. The tool works with any point total—whether the test had 20, 50, or 100 questions. For semester or year-long grades that combine multiple assignments with different weights, use our GPA calculator instead.
Letter grade scales vary by institution. Some schools use plus/minus grades (A-, B+), others use only A, B, C, D, F. This calculator uses a common scale that many schools follow. If your school uses different cutoffs, treat the result as an approximation. The percentage is always accurate; the letter grade is a standard reference.
This tool runs in your browser and does not store your inputs. It is free to use and requires no sign-up. For more advanced grading—weighted averages, multiple courses, credit hours—our GPA calculator provides that functionality.
