Scientific Notation Calculator – Convert To and From Scientific Form
Convert numbers between decimal and scientific notation. Enter a decimal value or a scientific form like 1.5e3 to get the equivalent representation.
Scientific Notation Calculator
Convert between decimal and scientific notation. Use format like 1.5e3 or 2.3E-4.
How scientific notation works
N = coefficient × 10exponent
The coefficient is between 1 and 10 (or -1 and -10 for negatives). The exponent is an integer. For 1500, coefficient = 1.5, exponent = 3.
Understanding scientific notation
Scientific notation is a compact way to write very large or very small numbers. Instead of writing 300,000,000 for the speed of light in meters per second, we write 3 × 10⁸ or 3e8. For tiny values like 0.000000001, we write 1 × 10⁻⁹ or 1e-9. This format makes arithmetic easier and reduces rounding errors in calculations.
The calculator supports bidirectional conversion. Enter a decimal number to see its scientific form, or enter a scientific expression to see the decimal value. Both positive and negative numbers are supported. The coefficient is normalized so that it is between 1 and 10 in absolute value (except for zero).
Scientific notation appears in physics, chemistry, astronomy, and engineering. When working with Avogadro's number (6.022 × 10²³), Planck's constant, or distances to stars, scientific notation is essential. This calculator helps students and professionals convert between forms quickly.
