Steel Weight Calculator
Estimate steel weight for rebar or plates. Enter dimensions in inches.
How the steel weight calculator works
Rebar: weight = π × (d/2)² × L × 0.283 lb/in³
Plate: weight = L × W × T × 0.283 lb/in³
Steel density ≈ 0.283 lb/in³. Dimensions in inches. Results in lb and kg.
Estimating steel weight for construction
Knowing the weight of steel helps with ordering, shipping, and structural design. Rebar is specified by diameter (e.g. #4 = ½ in, #8 = 1 in) and length. The calculator uses the cross-sectional area (πr²) times length and steel density to get weight. For plates, multiply length × width × thickness and density.
Steel density is approximately 0.283 lb per cubic inch (7850 kg/m³). The calculator assumes standard carbon steel; stainless or alloy steel may have slightly different density. For multiple identical pieces, use the quantity field to get total weight.
Use our length converter to switch between inches, feet, and metric if your dimensions are in other units. The concrete calculator helps estimate rebar needed for slabs and footings. Results are estimates; verify with your supplier for critical applications.
