Weighted GPA Calculator – Letter Grades and Honors Weights

Calculate your weighted GPA from letter grades and credits. Add optional weight multipliers for AP, honors or IB courses. Supports both weighted and unweighted calculations.

Weighted GPA Calculator

Calculate weighted GPA with letter grades and optional weight (e.g. 1.25 for honors/AP). Credits × (grade points × weight) determine the weighted average.

e.g. 1.25 for AP

How weighted GPA is calculated

Weighted GPA = Total (grade points × weight × credits) ÷ Total credits

GPA = Σ(grade_points × weight × credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

Letter grades map to points (A=4, B=3, etc.). The weight multiplies that for honors/AP. Credits determine how much each course counts toward the average.

Understanding weighted vs unweighted GPA

High schools and colleges use GPA to summarize academic performance. An unweighted GPA treats all courses equally: an A is 4.0 whether it is in regular or advanced placement. A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder courses, so an A in AP Calculus might count as 5.0 while an A in regular math counts as 4.0. This encourages students to take challenging classes without being penalized for lower grades in harder material.

Weight systems vary by school. Some use a 5.0 scale for AP (A=5, B=4, etc.), others use a multiplier like 1.25. This calculator lets you set a weight per course, so you can match your school's policy. Use weight 1.0 for all courses to get an unweighted GPA. Use 1.25 for AP or 1.1 for honors to approximate a weighted scale.

When applying to college, admissions offices often recalculate GPA to a standard scale. They may strip weights or use their own formula. Your transcript usually shows both weighted and unweighted. Use this calculator to plan your course load, see how a new grade affects your average, or estimate your GPA before official reporting. For a 10-point scale common in some countries, use our CGPA calculator instead.
