Work Hours Calculator

Add up total work hours across one or more sessions. Each session has a start and end time.

How the work hours calculator works

For each work session, the calculator computes:

duration = end_time − start_time

All session durations are summed. For example, 9:00–12:00 (3 hours) plus 13:00–17:30 (4.5 hours) gives 7.5 total hours. The tool does not apply pay rates or overtime rules; it only sums time.

When and why to use a work hours calculator

Freelancers, contractors, and hourly employees often work in multiple sessions per day—morning shift, lunch break, afternoon shift, or split schedules. Manually adding up hours and minutes is error-prone. A work hours calculator lets you enter each session’s start and end time and instantly see the total hours worked.

Use it to verify timesheets, prepare invoices, track billable hours, or ensure you meet minimum hours for benefits. The calculator works with any time format (24-hour or AM/PM) as long as you enter hours and minutes consistently. It does not round to quarter-hours or apply employer-specific rounding rules; for that, adjust the result manually or use your employer’s system.

For overtime pay—when hours beyond a threshold (e.g. 40 per week) are paid at a higher rate—use our overtime calculator. For converting total hours to salary or vice versa, use the hourly to salary or salary to hourly calculators. Together these tools cover time tracking, pay rates, and compensation planning.

This tool runs in your browser and does not store your inputs. It does not account for breaks, unpaid time, or employer-specific policies. Use the result as a starting point and adjust for your situation as needed.
